Bharat Kup is believed to be the site where Bharat, the younger brother of Lord Rama, is said to have lived and prayed for the well-being of his brother during Rama's 14-year exile in the forest.
According to the Ramayana, when Lord Rama was exiled, Bharat refused to accept the throne of Ayodhya that was rightfully his. Instead, he went to the forest in search of Lord Rama, carrying with him Lord Rama’s sandals (Paduka). Bharat placed the sandals on the throne of Ayodhya and vowed to rule the kingdom as Rama’s representative until his return.
